| About Databases - who needs them? |
A database is just a structure that lets you store
information, sometimes very large amounts of it, then
modify it and display it when required.
Your databases might be, for example
- catalogues of your products with descriptions and prices
- sales history
- dynamic inventory information
- an index of your services with rates
- details of your range of accommodation and tariffs
- accommodation bookings
- descriptions of your tours
- tour bookings
- customer information
- accounting records

| What's the point of having a database on a website? |
|
What this means to you is that you can have an interactive website, where your customers can make inquiries, order your products, book accommodation or whatever your business entails - and do it there and then - in real time.
That's what we call the "front end". The "back end" is where you or your staff can work on the same database, adding products, changing prices .. and let's not forget about shipping orders!
You have the ability to carry out all the inventory ordering, costing and financial management that you would expect in an in-house software system.
There are two great advantages to using an interactive website rather than the older style multi-user software systems. Your software can be accessed from anywhere on the planet, subject to secure login, of course. Plus, you and your staff will access the software via web browser, thus reducing the need for specialised training.

| Which database? |
|
We used to develop our web based databases mainly under ASP.NET,
using C# programming language and using Microsoft
SQL Server databases.
However, frankly, other excellent database management systems and development tools are available. In addition, many people don't wish to install the .NET framework.
As a result, we have been moving more and more to the use of PHP
programming language and MySQL databases, which are
Open Source products (so cost nothing to use) and don't require .NET
to operate. In fact, they are built into the packages offfered by most hosting servers.
